Scaling & Root Planing – Cumberland, RI
The First Line of Defense Against Gum Disease
Scaling and root planing, sometimes known collectively as a “deep cleaning,” is usually our first course of treatment after discovering that a patient has gum disease. This procedure can take about one to four appointments to complete, depending on the extent of a patient’s infection.
First, a member of our team will use an ultrasonic cleaner to clear away any plaque and bacterial buildup below the gum line (scaling), and then we’ll turn our focus to the roots of the teeth. Root planing involves smoothing out the rough surfaces of the roots to safeguard against plaque and bacteria buildup in the future, protecting a patient from future infections.
